What Is MOJ-Approved Legal Translation?

When you submit a translated document to Dubai Courts, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICA), embassies, or any UAE government authority, they will only accept translations that bear the official stamp of an MOJ-licensed translator. Certified vs Legal vs Sworn Translation — What's the Difference?
These terms are often used interchangeably but have distinct meanings in the UAE context:
- Certified Translation: A translation accompanied by a certificate from the translator or translation company attesting to its accuracy. While useful for some purposes, certified translation alone is not sufficient for UAE courts or government bodies — it does not confirm the translator is MOJ-licensed.
- Legal Translation (MOJ-Approved): Translation performed by an MOJ-licensed translator and stamped with their official seal. This is the standard required by UAE courts, government departments, and most official bodies. "Legal translation" in the UAE context specifically means MOJ-approved translation.
- Sworn Translation: A translation performed by a translator who has taken an oath before a court or government authority. In the UAE, the MOJ licensing system effectively fulfills the role of sworn translation — an MOJ-licensed translator's stamp carries the same legal weight as a sworn translator's certification in other jurisdictions.
Arabic Translation for UAE Courts: A Legal Requirement
All documents submitted to UAE courts must be in Arabic. Documents in any other language — even English — must be accompanied by an Arabic translation bearing the stamp of an MOJ-licensed translator. There are no exceptions to this rule, regardless of whether both parties to a case are English-speaking.
